What is the Torre Agbar (and what is it called)?

Some buildings become part of a city’s soul, and the Torre Agbar is one of them. With its bullet-like silhouette rising between the Eixample and Poblenou, this skyscraper designed by French architect Jean Nouvel has become one of the most photographed icons of Barcelona. It was inaugurated in September 2005 as the headquarters of the water company Aigües de Barcelona (AGBAR), hence its popular name. In 2015 it was officially renamed Torre Glòries, although locals —and most visitors— still call it Torre Agbar. Since May 2022 you can visit it inside: the Mirador Torre Glòries opens at 125 metres with 360° views over the city.

Some key facts about the building:

  • Architect: Jean Nouvel (inspired by the silhouettes of Montserrat and a jet of water).
  • Height: 144 metres to the glass dome.
  • Floors: 34 open-plan storeys, with no interior pillars.
  • Façade: two “skins” — one of aluminium sheeting in 26 colours and another of 52,744 glass louvres.
  • Night lighting: around 4,500 LED devices that change pattern depending on the event.
  • Address: Avinguda Diagonal, 211, Barcelona.

What can you see inside? The Mirador Torre Glòries visit

The visit begins on level -1, with the access control and the free audio guide (downloadable via QR, in 10 languages). From there, the route is divided into two main spaces.

The Hipermirador Barcelona (level -1)

Before going up, the visit begins with an artistic experience that reinterprets the city through four installations:

SectionWhat you’ll see
PrologueImages of Barcelona’s urban patterns
BarcelonansPaper sculptures portraying the city’s urban wildlife
RhythmsHolographic screen showing Barcelona in motion
Atmospheres27 × 4 m screen with real-time data: wind, humidity, sea state

⚠️ Important: the route is one-way; once you move forward you can’t go back, so take your time in each room.

The 360° Observation Deck (floor 30, at 125 m)

The lift goes straight up to floor 30, a large open oval with panoramic views over the whole city: from Montserrat to the Mediterranean, taking in the Sagrada Família, Tibidabo and the harbour. It’s one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Barcelona.

Cloud Cities Barcelona (optional experience)

On the same floor as the deck is the artwork Cloud Cities Barcelona, by artist Tomás Saraceno: an interactive sculpture of suspended spheres you can climb into and feel literally among the clouds. It’s booked with an extra ticket and its own time slot, requires good physical condition and has a minimum age (not suitable for young children, people with vertigo, heart problems or pregnant women).
