Tour de France 2026 in Barcelona

Grand Départ Tour de France à Barcelone 2026

In July 2026, Barcelona will transform into the world capital of cycling by hosting the Grand Départ of the 113th edition of the Tour de France. This historic event marks the third time the Grande Boucle starts in Spain (after San Sebastián in 1992 and Bilbao in 2023), establishing the Catalan city as a global sports hub following the success of the 1992 Olympics and the 2024 America’s Cup.

Tour de France in Barcelona

The 2026 Tour will start in Barcelona with a 19 km team time trial. This hasn’t happened since 1971, 55 years ago.

Route of the first stages of the 2026 Tour de France in Barcelona

Stage 1: Team Time Trial (July 4)

  • Route: Barcelona > Barcelona (19.7 km)
  • Highlights: A technical time trial along Barcelona’s coastline, passing by the Sagrada Família. The finish will be epic with a double climb up Montjuïc, ending in front of the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.
  • Historical fact: It’s the first time in 55 years (since 1971) that the Tour starts with a team time trial.

Detailed Route: Stage 1 (July 4, 2026)

  • Start point: Parc del Fòrum. Teams will depart from this modern seaside space, serving as a technical and warm-up zone.
  • Seafront and Olympic Port: The peloton will ride at high speed along the coast, passing the renovated Olympic Port, a flat and fast section ideal for specialists.
  • Through L’Eixample: The race will enter Cerdà’s grid, providing one of the most iconic images of the Tour.
  • Passing the Sagrada Família: The route circles Gaudí’s temple (whose central tower is expected to be completed in 2026), a major visual highlight for international TV.
  • Passeig de Gràcia: Riders pass by Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera), connecting modernist architecture with elite competition.
  • Avinguda Diagonal and Plaça Espanya: The final approach to the climb, where speed decreases in preparation for the ascent.
  • Montjuïc climb: The decisive section of the stage, a technical 1.1 km climb averaging 5% gradient.
  • Finish: Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. After a final 800 m effort at 7%, the first stage winner will be crowned in front of the iconic 1992 Olympics venue.

Stage 2: Tarragona to Barcelona (July 5)

  • Route: Tarragona > Barcelona (178.4 km)
  • The challenge: After leaving Imperial Tarraco, the peloton will cross the Garraf coast and Sitges to enter Barcelona. The final circuit includes three climbs to Montjuïc Castle, with gradients up to 13%, guaranteeing an exciting spectacle for attackers.

Detailed Itinerary: Stage 2 (Tarragona > Barcelona)

  • Start: Tarragona (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Departure by the Roman Amphitheatre, a spectacular start combining history and sport.
  • Garraf Coast: The race moves along the Mediterranean coast, passing iconic towns like El Vendrell, Calafell, and the photogenic Sitges.
  • Garraf Coastal technical section: A twisty section along the cliffs testing peloton control before entering the metropolitan area.
  • Entering Barcelona via Gran Via: After Castelldefels and L’Hospitalet, riders enter the city via Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, heading directly to the “magic mountain.”
  • Final Circuit at Montjuïc (“The Wall”): The stage becomes epic here. Riders complete a demanding circuit with 3 consecutive climbs to Montjuïc Castle.
  • Passing the Olympic Stadium: On each lap, riders pass the Olympic Ring, allowing spectators to see their favorites multiple times.
  • 13% gradients: The castle climb is short but brutal, with max gradients of 13%, where favorites are expected to launch decisive attacks.
  • Finish: Montjuïc Castle. The winner is crowned at the top, with the best panoramic views of Barcelona as the backdrop.

Stage 3: Departure from Granollers (July 6)

The Tour caravan will leave the province of Barcelona from Granollers heading north, completing a 100% Catalan start.
