Christmas markets are a long-standing tradition in Barcelona and an essential part of the city’s festive atmosphere. Historically, these markets were created to sell animals and traditional food products for the large family meals celebrated in December. Over time, they have evolved into vibrant seasonal fairs where visitors can find Christmas trees, nativity scenes, handmade gifts, decorations, and local crafts.
Today, Barcelona is one of the most popular winter destinations in Spain, and its Christmas markets attract both locals and visitors who want to experience the magic of the festive season in the city.
If you are visiting Barcelona in December, here are some of the best Christmas markets you shouldn’t miss.
Port Vell Christmas Fair
Located in the harbour area of Port Vell, just a short walk from Hotel Arc La Rambla, this modern Christmas market has quickly become one of the most popular festive attractions in the city.
The market occupies an area of around 5,000 m² and features numerous stalls selling local food, handmade gifts, and artisanal products. One of its main highlights is the largest Christmas tree in Catalonia, standing 31 metres tall and illuminated with LED technology.
Visitors can also enjoy a variety of family-friendly attractions, including a classic carousel, a Ferris wheel, and a floating nativity scene that hosts a light and music show every evening during the Christmas season.
Dates: From 5 December to 5 January.
Santa Llúcia Christmas Fair
The Santa Llúcia Fair is the oldest Christmas market in Catalonia and one of the most traditional in Barcelona. Located in front of the Cathedral, in Plaça de la Catedral, its origins date back to 1786.
Today, the fair features around 300 stalls offering everything needed to decorate a traditional Catalan Christmas. You’ll find nativity scene figures, Christmas trees, decorations, moss for cribs, handcrafted products, and traditional Catalan items such as the famous caganer figures and the Tió de Nadal.
One of the highlights of the fair is the giant Tió, a decorated wooden log with a painted face and covered with a blanket. According to Catalan tradition, children hit the log with a stick so that it “poops” gifts and sweets during Christmas celebrations.
Despite its popularity, the fair still maintains the authentic charm and decoration of traditional Christmas markets.
Dates: From 5 December to 23 December.
Sagrada Família Christmas Fair
The Sagrada Família Christmas Fair has been held since 1960 in the square in front of the famous basilica. With around 100 stalls, it offers a festive atmosphere with the spectacular backdrop of one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks.
Visitors can browse stalls selling Christmas decorations, handcrafted nativity figures, artisanal gifts, and traditional winter treats. It’s also a great place to taste seasonal street foods such as roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes, which are very popular in Catalonia during the colder months.
Taking a walk through this market in the evening, with the illuminated basilica in the background, is one of the most magical Christmas experiences in Barcelona.
Dates: From 5 December to 23 December.
Three Kings Fair on Gran Via
The Three Kings Fair (Fira de Reis) on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes is one of the largest Christmas markets in the city.
With around 250 stalls, the fair offers a wide range of products including Catalan handicrafts, toys, clothing, jewellery, scarves, accessories, and decorative items. There are also traditional churrería stalls where visitors can enjoy freshly made churros with hot chocolate.
This market is especially popular in the days leading up to Three Kings’ Day (6 January), when families prepare gifts for children in accordance with Spanish Christmas traditions.
Dates: From 19 December to 6 January.
