How to travel more sustainably? Discover 7 tips

Cómo viajar de forma sostenible

Traveling sustainably has become a priority as the impact of tourism has left its mark on our planet. This approach promotes tourism that balances economic, social and environmental impacts, ensuring that the needs of visitors, industry, the environment and host communities are met responsibly. In order to promote this type of tourism, from the Hotel Arc La Rambla we want to give you some tips for traveling in a more sustainable manner.

The World Tourism Organization establishes three key principles to promote sustainable tourism: optimization of environmental resources, respect for local culture and equitable distribution of wealth to benefit local communities.

1. Respect history and nature

It is essential that, when we travel, we are aware of our impact on the history and nature of the places we visit. We will avoid touching or altering historical buildings, monuments and ancient temples, and never take natural souvenirs such as stones or plants. In sensitive natural environments, such as coral reefs or rainforests, we need to report best practices to minimize impact. And above all refrain from acquiring flora, protected fauna or products derived from endangered species.

2. Connect with the local people and culture

Tourism can have a significant impact on host communities. For this impact to be positive, it is vital to respect local customs, traditions and culture. By interacting respectfully with the local people, we not only enrich our experience, but also contribute to the preservation of their cultural identity. This encourages a tourism that is based on the particularities and strengths of the destination, rather than imposing the needs of the visitor.

3. Choose the train whenever possible

The train is one of the most sustainable means of transport due to its lower CO2 emissions and its ability to transport a large number of people. Whenever we have the option, we will opt for the train over other more polluting means of transport such as the plane or the car. Once at the destination, we will try to get around on foot, by bicycle or use public transportation to further reduce our carbon footprint.

4. Travel in the low season

Traveling during off-peak periods is another effective way to promote sustainable tourism. This helps reduce the pressure on local resources and contributes to the economic stability of the city, which could be affected by the seasonality of tourism. Furthermore, we will have a more relaxed experience and sense the long routes or the traffic that is generated in the highest season.

5. Support local businesses

Opting for local products and services instead of large international chains is an effective way to contribute to the economy of the place we visit. By shopping at markets, eating at local restaurants or acquiring handicrafts, we will support local merchants and promote more equitable and sustainable economic development.

6. Be aware of water and energy consumption

Responsible use of water and energy is crucial. Simple actions like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or reusing towels at the hotel can make a big difference. These small practices help preserve resources and reduce the ecological footprint of our trip.

7. Do not leave waste

It is important that, during our trip, we make sure not to leave waste in the spaces we visit. Litter, especially plastics, can take years or centuries to degrade and have a devastating impact on the planet.

By following these tips, we will not only enjoy the trip, but we will also contribute to more respectful and sustainable tourism, ensuring that the wonders of the world can be appreciated by future generations.
