The best modernist buildings in Barcelona

Our hotel is located in one of the most central locations of the city, near some of the most important monuments of Catalan modernism. Discover in this post the jewels of modernism that you will be able to enjoy comfortably in your visit to Barcelona from Hotel Arc La Rambla.

Catalan modernism was an artistic and cultural movement that emerged in Barcelona in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The wealthy families of the Catalan bourgeoisie commissioned several projects to demonstrate their economic power and to promote the modernization of the city. In this sense, modernism rejected the style of industrial architecture and developed new concepts based on nature.

It is impossible to visit Barcelona without visiting some of its most outstanding modernist works:

1. La Sagrada Familia

Sagrada Familia is one of the great symbols of Barcelona and the most visited tourist monument in Spain. The construction of this church began in 1882 and, although it is still under construction, the official date of completion is set for 2026.

This architectural work designed by Antoni Gaudí is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Sagrada Família has been consolidated as one of the great works of Catalan modernism. In it, everything is built imitating the architecture of nature and there is not a single straight line inside the Church. Moreover, for Gaudí, colours and light were the manifestation of life, so he turned to light to give splendour to his work.

The Basilica has three facades, each representing the most important moments of Jesus’ life: His birth, his death and resurrection, and his glory.

In addition, when it is completed in 2026, it will become the tallest church in the world, standing 172.5 metres high.

La Sagrada Familia has become a symbol of Barcelona and a must see. Due to the large influx of visitors, at Hotel Arc La Rambla we can inform you of the rates available and the days of visit.

2. La Pedrera o Casa Milà

Another of Gaudí’s most famous buildings in Barcelona is Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera.

This is a modernist building designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí which was built between 1906 and 1910 on Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia by commission of Pere Milà and Roser Segimon. Casa Milà reflects Gaudí’s artistic fullness and his clear inspiration in nature.

It is considered to be Antoni Gaudí’s most emblematic civil building, due to its ornamental and decorative innovations that represented a turning point for the architectural styles of the time.

La Pedrera was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, was restored and opened to the public in 1996.

Today, the building is an important cultural centre that welcomes more than a million visitors every year and is the only Gaudinian work that shows all the work of Antoni Gaudí, making it one of the most popular and interesting places in the city of Barcelona.

Hotel Arc La Rambla is located just 20 minutes from La Pedrera, making it a strategic location for visiting one of the city’s most emblematic monuments.

3. Park Güell

The Park Güell is a public park full of gardens and characteristic elements of modernist architecture that is located in the upper part of Barcelona.

It was designed by Antoni Gaudí and commissioned by Eusebi Güell, built between 1900 and 1914 and inaugurated as a municipal park in 1926.

This work belongs to Gaudí’s naturalistic stage, a stage in which the Catalan architect perfected an architectural style based on nature as his main inspiration. In this sense, it brings together many of the modernist and innovative solutions that characterized the Catalan architect’s style in many of his works.

Over time, the Park Güell became one of the great attractions of Barcelona, was recognized as an artistic monument in 1969 and was finally declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
