The America’s Cup shows its commitment to sustainability

La Copa América de vela muestra su compromiso con la sostenibilidad

If you have plans to stay with us during the exciting days of the Copa América sailing competition in Barcelona, you should know that at the heart of this nautical competition, a story of commitment and sustainability is being woven that you won’t want to miss. The participating teams have raised anchors with a clear purpose: to make sustainable use of water. And here, at Hotel Arc La Rambla, we are proud to witness and participate in this journey towards a greener and more promising future.

Resource-saving

This summer, Barcelona becomes the stage for the Copa América sailing competition, with a special focus on environmental care. The water crisis we are experiencing does not go unnoticed, and the participants in this competition are determined to do their part to preserve our natural resources.

Sustainability will be a priority for the six teams competing in this edition. Some teams, like Alinghi Red Bull Racing, have taken concrete steps by installing desalination plants on board. This type of technology allows them to produce fresh water from seawater, thus reducing their dependence on local resources.

The Orient Express Racing Team, on the other hand, has announced that they will reuse water at their base. This simple action demonstrates a real commitment to the conservation of water resources and serves as an example for other teams and sports organizations.

More responsible practices

But sustainability is not limited to the participating teams alone. Port authorities and organizations like the Conselleria de Acció Climàtica and the Catalan Water Agency are working together to promote more sustainable practices in Catalan ports. This includes the implementation of water-saving mechanisms and the promotion of wastewater treatment and reuse technologies.

Additionally, the event’s organization, America’s Cup Events, has partnered with Agbar to use regenerated water in boat cleaning. This measure not only reduces the consumption of drinking water but also promotes a circular economy by giving treated water a second life.

Sport and sustainability

The Copa América sailing competition in Barcelona presents an opportunity to demonstrate that sports and sustainability can go hand in hand. From the installation of innovative technologies to the adoption of more responsible practices, every action counts in the fight to preserve our precious marine environment.
