Public transport: the best way to get around in Barcelona

Today we would like to take a look at the different public transport options in Barcelona that you can use to get around the city. Nowadays, thanks to the multitude of metro, regional train, tram and bus lines, among other more modern services such as hybrid or electric vehicles, we can move to any corner of Barcelona in a fast and sustainable way.

With today’s post we would like to give a brief overview of the history of Barcelona’s metropolitan transport and its main advantages. Would you like to join us?

1. The metro and its wide network of lines

The origin of Barcelona’s metro dates back to 1924, when the first official line of the city was built. The network has grown steadily since then, and now has a total of 12 lines distributed throughout the different districts.

The main advantages of the metro are the low price of tickets and passes, the frequency with which they pass through each stop and, of course, the fact that the network is made up of a total of 180 stations covering 146 kilometres, which allows users to reach all places of interest fast and at low cost.

2. Regional trains: the most comfortable option

If you want to visit other towns during your stay in Barcelona, the regional trains are the ideal option. Despite being a fundamental part of the public transport system in the Barcelona area, the regional trains also allow you to get to towns such as Tarragona or Lleida.

The suburban trains operate from 5 am to 00 am from Sunday to Thursday, on Fridays until 2 am and on Saturdays and some days before a public holiday they are active 24 hours a day.

3. The tram: the oldest urban rail service in Barcelona

The Tram was for many years the most important transport service in the city of Barcelona. The first line was inaugurated in 1872 with the peculiarity that the first trams were pulled by horses.

Nowadays it has 6 active lines, but it is not usually frequented by tourists because its stops are far from many of the city’s points of interest. Anyway, if you want to discover a pleasant and sustainable means of transport, do not hesitate to make a trip to know Barcelona from another point of view.

At Hotel Arc La Rambla we are part of the organizations adhering to the Commitment to Sustainable Tourism Barcelona Biosphere and we encourage our guests to use sustainable transport when getting around the city.

To facilitate the choice of sustainable transport, we collaborate with Welcome Pickups, who preferably use one of their 25 hybrid and 2 electric vehicles in their transport to our hotel in a commitment to sustainable transport.

We hope that this short guide to public transport in Barcelona will be useful for you. Further on we would like to explain other metropolitan transport services such as the cable car, the golondrinas or the tourist bus so that you can have a general idea of all the different options that you can find during your visit to Barcelona.
