Where does the city’s water come from?

De dónde viene el agua - Hotel Arc La Rambla Barcelona

Today is World Water Day and at Hotel Arc La Rambla we wonder where exactly the water that comes out of the tap in Barcelona comes from.

The water supply of the city mainly comes from three main sources: underground springs, the Llobregat River, and the Ter River. These water resources undergo a strict treatment process to ensure their quality and safety before reaching our homes or the rooms of our guests.

  • Groundwater, extracted from aquifers beneath the city, is one of the main sources of supply. Through wells, it is extracted and undergoes a process of filtration and disinfection at treatment plants to remove impurities and microorganisms, thus ensuring its potability.

  • On the other hand, the Llobregat River, although vulnerable to contamination, is also a source used for water supply. However, it undergoes a more thorough treatment process to guarantee its quality and safety.

  • Additionally, the Ter River, which flows from the province of Girona to the Mediterranean Sea, also contributes to the water supply in Barcelona. It also undergoes a rigorous filtration and disinfection process to meet required quality standards.

Once treated, drinking water is distributed through an extensive network of pipes that supply the entire city. This distribution network ensures that water reaches every home, business, and public space in Barcelona safely and reliably.

Water does not fall from the sky

Barcelona largely relies on reliable and safe water sources for its residents and visitors. However, this dependence is not without challenges, and one of the most alarming is drought. Not all the water we need falls from the sky, and the water supply is under restrictions and in a state of emergency. If the drought persists, Catalonia will have to source water through other means. In fact, the Port of Barcelona is already adapting its facilities to receive ships with water if necessary, as a last resort.

At Hotel Arc La Rambla, we want to emphasize the importance of preserving and caring for water. Adopting measures for water conservation and efficient use is essential to mitigate the effects of drought and ensure the availability of water for future generations. Small gestures like turning off the tap when not in use, prioritizing the use of the shower, using dual flush toilets, and using a glass for brushing teeth are some of the sustainable practices we can adopt in our daily lives.

On this World Water Day, let us remember that every drop counts and that together we can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for everyone.
