In many countries, a typical activity is passing through the local flea market on the weekend. Here in Barcelona, the largest flea market is known as El Mercat dels Encants or The Charms Fair.
It is said that this flea market is one of the oldest in Europe dating back to the 14th century! However the exact date is unknown. Here, one may find many unique antique items or second-hand clothing, artworks and various handmade items. Aside from being Barcelona’s largest flea market, it is also the only permanent flea market in the city!
In September of 2013, the market place was renovated and reconstructed. Now the market has various levels and a beautiful zinc roof which reflects the enormous market upon the ceiling. The traditional tents which are used to sell the antiques and smaller items still remain. One may find in the new structure an assortment of foods and other fresh products.
This market is located at Avinguda Meridiana 69 just minutes from the Glories metro stop and the Plaza de Glories! It is truly a sight to see and attracts thousands of shoppers each year. Anything from smaller knick-knacks to bargain prices for furniture can be found here. The market as well as the individual tents are typically open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am until 8pm occasionally opening on Saturdays!
