Impossible colours on the fruit stalls, mountains of Iberian ham, fish and seafood just in, spices, cheeses, sweets and the buzz of traders who’ve stood behind the counter for generations: it is, without exaggeration, an experience for all five senses.

Its official name is Mercat de Sant Josep, because it stands on the site of the former convent of Sant Josep, but everyone knows it as La Boqueria. It’s the city’s largest and most famous market, with over 300 stalls, and it isn’t only a tourist attraction: it’s still a living market where locals do their shopping. In 2005 it was named Best Market in the World at an international conference held in Washington.

Eight centuries of history

The Boqueria’s origins go a long way back. The first documentary mention dates from 1217, when tables were set up beside one of the gates of the old city wall to sell meat. For centuries it was an open-air market of street traders, located at the city gates. The name “Boqueria” comes, by tradition, from an old place selling goat meat (boc in Catalan).

The building we know today began construction in 1840, on the site of the Sant Josep convent, and was completed over the following decades. The distinctive metal roof, with its great iron-and-glass structure, was added in 1914, and the striking entrance portico with its Art Nouveau-style stained glass became one of the most recognisable images on Las Ramblas.

💡 Don’t miss, right in front of the entrance, the Joan Miró mosaic set into the pavement of Las Ramblas: a work that many tourists walk over without knowing it’s by the great Catalan artist.

What to see and eat at the Boqueria?

The stalls

As soon as you enter you’re greeted by the colourful fresh fruit and juice stalls, followed by the Iberian ham and cured meats, the fish and seafood counters, the butchers, the cheesemongers, the stalls of nuts, spices and chocolates and those with exotic products from around the world. Many stalls have been run by the same families for generations.

The legendary tapas bars

The Boqueria’s great secret is its little counter bars, where you eat superbly from the market’s own produce. The most famous are El Quim de la Boqueria (renowned for its fried eggs with baby squid), Bar Pinotxo (an institution of traditional Catalan cooking) and the Kiosko Universal (for its griddled fish and seafood). There’s usually a queue and standing room, but it’s worth it.

A cooking class or a guided tour

To go deeper, there are gastronomic guided tours and cooking classes that start by buying the produce in the market. The best time to visit is early in the morning, when there are fewer people and the produce is freshest; some stalls close earlier if they sell out.

How much does it cost to enter the Boqueria?

Entry is completely free. It’s a working public market, so you can wander freely among its stalls; you only pay if you buy produce or eat at one of its bars.

What can you eat at the Boqueria?

As well as buying fresh produce (fruit, ham, cheeses, fish), you can eat at its legendary tapas bars, such as El Quim de la Boqueria, Bar Pinotxo or the Kiosko Universal, which serve traditional Catalan cooking and freshly made fish and seafood using produce from the market itself.

Is the Boqueria under renovation?

Yes. The market is undergoing a refurbishment planned for 2025-2027, including a new roof and wider aisles. However, it remains open and fully operational during the works, though there may be a sectioned-off area or a temporarily relocated stall.

How do you get to the Boqueria?

It’s at La Rambla, 91, in Ciutat Vella. The nearest metro stop is Liceu (Line 3), right by the market. It’s also about a 10-minute walk from Catalunya (Lines 1 and 3) and Drassanes (Line 3).

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "inLanguage": "en",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "What are the Boqueria's opening hours?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "The market opens Monday to Saturday, 8:00 to 20:30, and closes on Sundays and public holidays.
