It is a celebration in honour of the Mare de D\u00e8u de <strong>La Merc\u00e8<\/strong>, one of the patron saints of Barcelona, filling the city with cultural, free musical and religious events in all the districts.<\/p>\n<p>The origin of this festivity goes back to 1687, when <strong>the city of Barcelona<\/strong> suffered a plague of locusts. The citizens prayed to the Virgin of La Merc\u00e8 and the plague disappeared. The <strong>Consell de Cent<\/strong> then named La Merc\u00e8 the patron saint of the city, which shares this honour with Santa Eul\u00e0lia, the main winter festivals in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The traditional celebration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During the days of the celebration stand out the traditional activities like the <strong>parade of giants<\/strong>, the <strong>castellers<\/strong> and a long <strong>Correfoc<\/strong> that crosses Via Laietana. The castellers are human towers formed by men, women and children of all ages in perfect synchronicity that can reach up to 9 floors high. The castellers of La Merc\u00e8 are held in <strong>Pla\u00e7a Sant Jaume<\/strong> at midday on 22 September.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>correfoc<\/strong> is a parade where the fire is the main protagonist. Devils and beasts run through the central streets of the city spitting fire to all participants. It is a unique show with two versions: the Junior and the Adult.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The giants and capgrossos (&#8221; bigheads &#8220;)<\/strong> march through the Gothic quarter filling it with colour and music in the <strong>Cavalcade of La Merc\u00e8<\/strong>. These giants dance to the traditional music of the collas (bands) to the surprise of thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hotelarclarambla.com\/agenda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hotel-arc-rambla-barcelona-blog-culture-castellers-2-scaled.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hotelarclarambla.com\/agenda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hotel-arc-rambla-barcelona-blog-culture-castellers-2-683x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60711\" width=\"335\" height=\"502\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2>Free Concerts<\/h2>\n<p>All the people of Barcelona and those who visit the city can enjoy free concerts, which are held in Forum, <a href=\"http:\/\/hotelarc.local\/blog\/The-5-best-beaches-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bogatell beach<\/strong>,<\/a> Mar\u00eda Cristina avenue, Cathedral avenue, the old Damm factory, Pla\u00e7a dels \u00c0ngels and Parc de La Ciutadella.<\/p>\n<p>The musical selection is wide and diverse. The BAM Festival offers concerts of more alternative music, with musical groups ranging from hip-hop to music with ethnic tints. This year <strong>Beirut<\/strong> is the guest country, so you can enjoy music from Lebanon, another example of the cultural mix that exists in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Alb\u00e9niz Palace<\/strong> hosts concerts thought for the whole family and located in the surroundings of Montju\u00efc.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Piromusical in the fountains of Montju\u00efc<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The finishing touch to La Merc\u00e8 is the pyromusical celebration on the night of 24 September. It is a <strong>light and music show<\/strong> in the fountains of Montju\u00efc in which the water dances to the sound of different songs.<\/p>\n<p>Like the rest of the activities, it is free and can be seen from Avenida Mar\u00eda Cristina.
