The caves formed over 36 million years ago<\/strong> from water erosion on Montserrat\u2019s limestone rocks. Their name comes from “salnitre” (saltpeter), a nitrate once extracted here to make gunpowder. It was in this period that Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/strong> visited the Salnitre Caves<\/strong> and was struck by the organic shapes of the chambers. The undulating columns, natural vaults, and mineral textures inspired elements of the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/strong> and other Modernist works. For Gaud\u00ed, nature was living architecture \u2014 an endless source of wisdom \u2014 and these caves became his underground laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Spanish Civil War (1936\u20131939)<\/strong>, the caves served as a refuge for the civilian<\/strong> population, protecting them from the bombings that threatened the area.
